Bovada is a legit sportsbook for US bettors, and its prices are about average. I measured the margin on four of its markets on October 21, 2026, and it came out between 3.48% and 4.76%, with an average of 4.10%. That is the normal price of a recreational sportsbook, not a bargain and not a rip-off. What Bovada does well is everything around the price: in the years I had an account there, it always paid, it paid quickly, it was fair and support answered. What it does not do is give you a low margin. If you bet there, you need your own number for the game, because a 4.76% margin on a standard spread is a cost you only beat by finding bets the price gets wrong.
Below is the working for every number, so you can check it yourself.
Is Bovada legit?
Yes, in the sense that matters most with an offshore sportsbook: it pays. Bovada is not licensed in any US state. Its own site says it is "licensed and regulated by the Union of the Comoros and the Central Reserve Authority of Western Sahara."
That means there is no US regulator you can go to if a bet is settled wrongly or a withdrawal is held. With an offshore book, the real protection is its record of paying winners.
This is why I always put getting paid ahead of a bonus or a slightly better price. Bovada and Cloudbet were my two standouts after years of use. Both always paid and paid quickly. Bovada is the one I point US bettors to, and Cloudbet is the one for the rest of the world.
Whether you are allowed to use an offshore sportsbook depends on the law where you live. I am not a lawyer, so check that part before you deposit.
How much margin does Bovada charge?
The margin is what the sportsbook charges you for taking the bet. To find it, turn both sides of a market into implied probabilities and add them up. Whatever is above 100% is the margin.
Here are four markets I took from Bovada on October 21, 2026:
| Market | Side A | Side B | Implied total | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NFL spread, Patriots at Bears | Patriots +3 at -110 (1.91) | Bears -3 at -110 (1.91) | 104.76% | 4.76% |
| NFL moneyline, Patriots at Bears | Patriots +140 (2.40) | Bears -165 (1.61) | 103.93% | 3.93% |
| NBA moneyline, Hawks at Magic | Hawks +130 (2.30) | Magic -150 (1.67) | 103.48% | 3.48% |
| MLB World Series Game 1 moneyline, Rays at Brewers | Rays +135 (2.35) | Brewers -161 (1.62) | 104.24% | 4.24% |
The working for the spread is the simplest. A price of -110 is 1.909 in decimal odds. One divided by 1.909 is 52.38%. Both sides are -110, so the total is 52.38% + 52.38% = 104.76%. The margin is 4.76%.
The NFL moneyline works the same way. +140 is 2.40 in decimal, so the Patriots imply 1 / 2.40 = 41.67%. -165 is 1.606, so the Bears imply 1 / 1.606 = 62.26%. Together that is 103.93%, a margin of 3.93%.
The average of the four is 4.10%.
Two things stand out. The NFL spread is the most expensive of the four lines here. And these are the main markets. Player props and same-game parlays usually carry a much higher margin at every sportsbook. I did not measure those here.
You can run this on any price you are offered with the bookmaker margin lesson. If you want to go one step further and remove the margin to see the sportsbook's own fair price, Devigging Explained shows how.
Is Bovada's margin higher than other sportsbooks?
Not on main lines. Earlier this month I measured 14 NFL spreads at Bovada, DraftKings and FanDuel. The average margin was 4.71% at Bovada, 4.73% at DraftKings and 4.85% at FanDuel. The full comparison is in Bovada vs DraftKings vs FanDuel.
So Bovada charges what the big US books charge. I have never considered it a fully soft book, but I rate it respectable, trustworthy and good on bonuses. Its prices are not the reason to open an account. Its record of paying, and the fact that it gives you a second number to compare, are.
What does a 4.76% margin cost you over a season?
More than most bettors think. Take a game that is a true coin flip, and bet $100 on it at -110 (1.91).
- When you win, you get $90.91 profit.
- When you lose, you lose $100.
- Over many bets that average out at 50%, you lose $4.55 for every $100 you stake.
Bet $50 a game, 200 times a season, and that is $10,000 staked. At that cost, you hand back about $455 if all you do is pick sides at random.
To break even at -110, you need to win 52.38% of your bets. That is the number your betting has to clear before it makes a cent.
This is where your own numbers matter. When I tracked my NFL model bet by bet against Pinnacle's closing line, the closing line value came out at +3.81% on one season and +4.25% on the 2025/26 snapshot. The edge a working method produces and the margin you pay are numbers of the same size. Beating that margin takes a real method, not a feeling about a team.
How fast does Bovada pay out?
Fast, if you use crypto. Bovada's help center lists these withdrawal times, counted from when the withdrawal is approved:
- Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, Ethereum, USD Tether and Litecoin: up to 1 hour
- Bitcoin: up to 24 hours
- Voucher: about 24 hours, with the code sent by email
The approval step comes first, so the total time is a little longer than these numbers.
That matches what I saw. When I had an account at Bovada, it paid quickly.
What is the Bovada welcome bonus?
On October 21, 2026, Bovada's site listed two welcome offers for sports:
- Crypto sports welcome bonus: 75% match on your first deposit, up to $750, with the bonus code BTCSWB750.
- Standard sports welcome bonus: 50% match on your first deposit, up to $250.
Read the rollover before you claim either one. The rollover is how many times you must bet the deposit plus the bonus before you can withdraw it. On the day I checked, two of Bovada's own bonus pages showed different rollover figures for sports, so the terms in the cashier are the ones to trust.
A bonus is worth taking when you would bet that amount anyway. It is not worth betting more to clear it.
Which states can't use Bovada?
Bovada does not accept players from 19 states and Washington, D.C. Its help center lists:
Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont and West Virginia, plus Washington, D.C.
This list has changed before, so check it on the day you open an account. Most of these are states where licensed books like DraftKings and FanDuel operate, so in those states the choice is made for you.
Will Bovada limit you if you win?
It can. Bovada is built for recreational bettors, and like most books of that kind, it can lower stake limits for customers it sees as winning steadily.
For most bettors this comes much later, after a long run of well-priced bets. It is still a reason to keep more than one account. When one book cuts your limits, the others are already open, and you keep your records, so you know your results are real.
So should you open a Bovada account?
If you live in a state Bovada accepts, yes, as one of your accounts.
- It pays, and with crypto it pays fast.
- Its margin is the same as the big US books, so you are not paying extra for the offshore route.
- It gives you a second price to compare with whatever book you already use.
You can open a Bovada account here. The full list of sportsbooks I point bettors to, by region, is on the where to bet page.
Whatever you open, make your number first. The margin is a fixed cost. The only way past it is betting only when your number says the price is wrong.
FAQ
Is Bovada safe to use?
In the years I had an account at Bovada, it always paid and it paid quickly. It is an offshore sportsbook, licensed by the Union of the Comoros and the Central Reserve Authority of Western Sahara, not by any US state. That means no US regulator will take your case if something goes wrong. Its record of paying is the main protection you have, which is why it matters more than any bonus. Check the law where you live before you deposit.
What is Bovada's margin on NFL games?
On a standard NFL point spread priced at -110 on both sides (1.91 in decimal), Bovada's margin is 4.76%. On the NFL moneyline I checked on October 21, 2026, Patriots +140 (2.40) and Bears -165 (1.61), it was 3.93%. Across four main markets that day, the average was 4.10%. Props and same-game parlays usually carry a higher margin than these main lines, at Bovada and at every other sportsbook.
How long does a Bovada withdrawal take?
With most cryptocurrencies, Bovada says a withdrawal takes up to 1 hour once it is approved. That covers Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, Ethereum, USD Tether and Litecoin. Bitcoin takes up to 24 hours after approval, and a voucher takes about 24 hours. The approval step comes before these times, so allow a little longer in total. Check the estimate for your method on the cashier page before you request it.
What is the Bovada bonus code?
The code for Bovada's crypto sports welcome bonus is BTCSWB750, which gives a 75% match on your first deposit up to $750. This was the offer listed on October 21, 2026. There is also a standard 50% match up to $250. Both come with a rollover you must complete before you withdraw the bonus. Bovada's bonus pages showed different rollover figures on the day I checked, so read the terms in the cashier before you claim it.
Can I use Bovada in my state?
Bovada accepts US players except in 19 states and Washington, D.C. The excluded states are Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont and West Virginia. The list has changed before, so check Bovada's help center on the day you sign up. Being accepted by Bovada does not tell you what your state's law says about offshore betting, so check that too.
Does Bovada have better odds than DraftKings?
Not on main NFL lines. In the first week of October 2026, I measured 14 NFL spreads and found an average margin of 4.71% at Bovada and 4.73% at DraftKings, which is equal for any practical purpose. The two books often post a different number on the same game, though. That is the real reason to hold both accounts where you can: you take the better number every time, and your own model tells you which one that is.
If you want a finished sheet that gives you your own number for NFL, NBA or MLB games, my models are on the models page. If you want one bet priced against the line Bovada is offering you, the AI Betting Assistant does that.
Where to start if you have never made your own number
A 4.76% margin is only a problem if you bet without knowing what the game is worth. If you have never built a number of your own, The Ultimate Modern Bettor's Toolkit walks you through your first model, from a blank spreadsheet to a price you can compare with Bovada's.
$27, one payment. It includes the +EV betting model spreadsheet, a 45-minute video training that builds your first model with you, and the four-bucket staking system. 30-day money-back guarantee.
MB built Underdog Chance around one idea: make your own number first, then bet only when the price beats it. Over the last 20+ years his simple, probability-based Google Sheets models have helped thousands of bettors stop following picks and start pricing bets for themselves.
